Vestiges Imaginés brings together three artistic practices that each explore, in their own way, what remains, what emerges, and what the imagination transforms. Between matter and memory, figuration and abstraction, the works of Frédérique Domergue, Claire Roger, and Florence Jarrige create a sensitive landscape in which forms seem to carry the traces of stories, whether real or imagined.
In Frédérique Domergue’s oxidized paintings, matter becomes a territory. Hovering at the edge of abstraction, her surfaces evoke maritime horizons, depths, and the abyss. Water appears less as a landscape to be contemplated than as an existential metaphor: what separates us, what draws us in, what remains beyond our reach. The oxidation, with its accidents and subtle variations, seems to inscribe time itself into the material, opening up a space onto which each viewer can project their own narratives.
The art objects and ceramic vessels of Claire Roger offer a different relationship to storytelling. Their surfaces feature small scenes, fragments of landscapes, and half-recognizable forms that seem to belong to a world in the process of being created. These incomplete images invite the viewer to imagine what is not shown: a before, an after, characters, stories.
In Florence Jarrige’s work, stone gives rise to female figures that seem to echo the busts of Antiquity, while simultaneously moving beyond them. Raised upon tall pillars, they leave behind a mere reference to the past and reach upward toward the sky.
Thus, from the depths of the sea to the sketched narratives of ceramic vessels, and finally to the silent elevation of sculpture, Vestiges Imaginés explores the traces left by time and the power of the imagination to give them new life.
