Sophie Dumas

My work is centered on light and composition. The play with space is what I would define as contemporary in my work. In my studio, I present objects like on a stage, I move them about and change their lighting. It’s reminiscent of architecture or of sheet music and seeking the right note.

This music continues on the canvas to which I bring my composition.

I paint, place colors, raise light,
I dim, I erase, things appear and disappear,
I continue to scrape and rub and cover until arrives
the intimate sensation that the painting is right.
