Jean Matrot’s art begs the question : why paint what one can see ? or photograph ? Through his representation of scenes of daily life, he draws attention to moments of beauty that may be overlooked, underappreciated.

Full of vibrance and color, his paintings invite us to open our eyes to the surrounding world. Jean Matrot’s paintings and sculptures make us pause and really see, amidst our modern life is so saturated with images.

This artist is more interested in the reality than idealized life. He often includes urban furniture or electric lines, road signs… resulting in a very recognizeable, personal experience for the observer.

Representing reality also implies than an artist’s work traces his own life experience, bringing it into another temporal dimension. Ultimately his paintings and sculptures fit together like pieces of a puzzle representing his own life. His favorite subjects are urban landscapes, although at times he enjoys escaping into portraiture.

Jean Matrot lives in Burgundy. Trained as an interior designer, he has drawn from a young age and experimented with different media before settling primarily on oil painting. More recently, he has become interested in volume work and created his first bronze sculptures as a complement to his paintings.
