Trained at the School of Applied Arts of the City of Lyon, Sophie Barut worked for 18 years as an interior designer before establishing herself as a sculptor in 2015. She creates bronze sculptures using the “lost-wax” casting technique, in partnership with the Adobati foundry in the Drôme region.
Childhood, inner life, fragility, the delicate balance of life, and the vital force hidden within each of us are her favourite themes. She draws inspiration from her own personal experience, having been deeply affected by her husband’s disability, which occurred at the beginning of their marriage.
Like a common thread running through her sculptures, the presence of a small bird reminds us that we are never alone, and that we should listen to the quiet inner voice that urges us to trust and whispers: “Do not be afraid.”
Sophie Barut lives and works in Caluire, near Lyon (Rhône), France.
