Simon Bellégo is an artist with a multidisciplinary background spanning both painting (Lorient School of Fine Arts) and ceramics (CNIFOP in Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye, La Maison de la Terre in Dieulefit, and a CAP qualification from Saint-Victor-des-Oules). Based in Brittany, he has developed a distinctive figurative language that unfolds across both two- and three-dimensional forms.
Working primarily with earthenware, he decorates its surface with coloured slips (engobes), creating richly textured and expressive compositions. Slip is liquid clay that can be used in a variety of ways in ceramic practice. While it is commonly employed for casting, it can also be coloured with ceramic pigments and used as a decorative medium.
For an artist with a background in painting, accustomed to drawing and brushwork, slip offers exceptional expressive possibilities. Its consistency can be adjusted by adding or reducing water, allowing it to range from fluid washes to dense, opaque applications. This versatility provides a level of painterly control that is far more immediate and flexible than that of glaze, making it an ideal medium for creating richly nuanced surfaces.
While ceramics are SImon Bellégo’s preferred medium, they also appear as a recurring subject, weaving through an artistic practice that blurs the boundaries between image and object.
