Grès, émaux shino, engobes

Nature inspires this artist’s artistic journey, and the small rural village where he resides provides the perfect conditions for my work to flourish.
His love of clay, and perhaps even moreso his love of decorative techniques has fascinated him from the very beginning. Investigating the characteristics of and possibilities afforded by various glazes guides my work. At the moment, he is exploring two main directions :
At the heart of his production is work with shino glazes used to decorate, with a paintbrush, natural motifs. His goal is firstly to render images (mainly birds, trees, and the underwater world) in the most natural way possible, and also to integrate them into his own own poetic environment.
The second technique that he has developed is based on decorating with slip, which he covers with a thick transparent glaze. The effect is a slightly crackled surface, showing the motifs as if through a window or even the water’s surface.

All of these motifs are applied to pottery which he has thrown, with the exception of square or rectangular platters built from slabs of clay. After a bisque firing at 960°C, the glazed pieces are refired in a gas kiln with a reduction atmosphere at a high temperature (1320°C).
